TikTok's platform experienced a failure in their media container creation service, which is the step where a video gets prepared on their end before publication. Around 4,000 posts to TikTok failed over an 18-hour window. Other tools that publish to TikTok reported the same issue at the same time.
Customer impact: Anyone trying to publish to TikTok during that window may have seen posts fail. Posts to other platforms were unaffected.
Steps to resolution: Because the issue was on TikTok's end, there wasn't a fix we could ship. What we did was put up a banner in the Help Center, update our status page, reply to people writing in, and keep an eye on the error rates across multiple time zones until we saw a clean stretch of recovery.
Key learnings: We got useful practice on overnight handoffs across our European and Americas timezones - the response was smooth across five different people picking up the comms lead role, which is exactly the kind of coverage we want.
